Chapter 3

Later, after Elisabeth had eaten dinner with her mother, they heard something.  It was Elisabeth's father, opening the kitchen door.  "Hi, Dad!"  Elisabeth ran to her father.  "Hey, sweetie," Dad replied.  "Frank, honey, sit down and eat.  Dinner is waiting for you."  Mom said.  Dad looked a little confused, because he said, "Sorry, Abby, sweetie, I ate dinner at a restaurant today."  Mom stared at Dad.   She looked a little hurt and surprised, and she said, "Oh, uh, that's okay, um, honey.  Uh, no problem!  It's, urm, okay!"  Dad looked as if he wished he had never said that he ate dinner at a restaurant.  "May I go upstairs, Daddy?"  asked Elisabeth, quietly.  "Alright, sweetie, sure!"  Dad replied.  "Thanks,"  Elisabeth ran upstairs to her bedroom again.  She looked out the window into the hard, pouring rain.  She couldn't see much of anything.  Suddenly, she saw something moving down the sidewalk past her house.  There, without a raincoat, was Julia!  She had her head bent down, trying to avoid the wind and rain as she walked.  Her black hair was soaking wet, her skin was cold and wet, and she was, crying, thought Elisabeth.  Elisabeth jerked out of her daydreaming, opened the deck door, ran outside, and gave Julia Brooke a small raincoat, one of Elisabeth's old ones.  The girl's eyes met briefly, as if Julia's eyes were trying to say a soft thank you.  Julia looked at her raincoat as soon as the raincoat flipped onto her shoulders, and without looking behind or saying good-bye, she ran quickly.  Elisabeth looked piteously after her.  I feel so sorry for her, thought Elisabeth, She's fatherless, motherless, she has no brothers or sisters, she has to live with her aunt, and oh!  she didn't have a raincoat!  Elisabeth ran back into the house, exhausted from the rain and cold and fell on her bed.  Before she closed her eyes and went to sleep, she thought she would never, ever hold a grudge against Julia again.
